The Auditory Brain Stem Response (ABR) is a test to measure the brain wave activity in response to certain tones and is recorded using electrodes placed on the scalp.

Clinical Procedure
- Patient is made to lie on a reclining chair or bed and remain still. It is not necessary for patient to be awake during the test.
- Electrodes are placed on the patient’s vertex, earlobes & forehead.
- A continuous click or tone will be delivered through earphones.
- The attached electrodes pick up brain’s response to these sounds and a computer sums the time-locked responses for the first 10 msec after sound stimulation.
- Results are presented in a form of graph.
Patient Prior Preparation
- ABR is a risk free test.
- Patient may be requested to have a hair wash on previous night of the test.
- It is mandatory for babies & children to be asleep during the test. Parents are requested to plan accordingly.
- For children above 7 years, the ABR test is usually done when the child is awake. It is important for the child to remain relaxed and lie still while testing.
- Incase the patient/child has any special needs or health issues, kindly call our audiology department and notify us in advance.
Average Testing Time
For an effective ABR testing session it fetches around 60 – 90mins to complete. Clinical reports will be provided immediately after test.
